The Norwegian/Swedish artist Jan Marius Kiøsterud (b. 1980) works within an interdisciplinary practice with a main focus on abstraction in sculpture and installations.
Kiøsterud works in project-based series where each series relate to a certain visual expression or idea that is explored within a limited time frame, in series defined by everything from minimalism to colourful expressionism.
Each project is triggered by specific materials, visual expressions or concepts that Kiøsterud explores into an abstract sculptural expression. What leads to a new project is sometimes related to previous series, sometimes inspired by contemporary or historical artworks, or from an interest in challenging a general opinion of a material or an expression, and to examine how context and visual expression can change this view.
Kiøsteruds artistic expression consists of contradictions between what is regarded as traditionally beautiful and what can be seen as disgusting, from an interest in human nature and its complexity. The human psyche, sexuality, nostalgia and love are defined and become comprehensive by a number of contradictory feelings and factors, something that the art of Kiøsterud also inhibits.
Jan Marius Kiøsterud studied visual arts at Akademin Valand in Gothenburg, Sweden, the National Academy of the Arts in Oslo, Norway and Jutland Art Academy, Århus, Denmark. He is based in Malmö since 2016.
